熱帯アメリカと西インド諸島に分布しています。高さは１〜３メートルほどになり、大きな団扇状の葉が広がります。花はサトイモ科に似ています。果実は熟すとむけ落ちて朱赤色の果肉が現れます。パナマ帽の原料になりますが、若葉を天日で乾燥させ、さらに煮沸した後に漂白して使うそうです。

ヤシ科パナマソウ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Carludovica palmata。英名は Panama hat plant。

The Panama hat plant (Carludovica palmata) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the tropical America and the West Indies. The plant can reach 1-3 m in height. The leaves are large fan-shaped. The flowers resemble to the Arum family. The fruits will split open and appears vermillion-red fruit pulps when ripen. The young leaves are used as a fabric raw material of Panama hat. They will be dried in the sun, boiled up and bleached out.
