マレー半島からマレー群島が原産だといわれています。幹は真っ直ぐに伸び、高さは１５〜２０メートルになります。葉は大きく、掌状に７〜９裂します。雌雄同株です。果実は大きな球形から長楕円形で、直径は１０〜３０センチほどあります。果実にはデンプンが含まれ、蒸したり焼いて食用にされます。

クワ科パンノキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Artocarpus altilis。英名は Breadfruit、Breadnut。

The Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) belongs to Moraceae (the Mulberry family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is probably native to the Malay Peninsula and the Malay Islands. The stem is erect and can reach 15-20 m in height. Leaves are large and diveided into palmately 7-9 lobes. This tree is monoecis. Fruits are large oblong 10-30 cm in diameter. This fruits contains amylum and used for steamed or roasted food.
