The Silver slipper orchid (Paphiopedilum micranthum) belongs to Orchdaceae (the Orchid family). This terrestrial orchid was discovered in Yunnan, China, in the late 1980s. The leaves are dark green with green patches on a dark green background. The micranthum species is characterized by its large ball-shaped labellum. The petals have various shades of red stripes with yellow or green overlays. The labellum is usually pink, but pure white types are also available. It can take from five to ten years for a new bud to flower. In Chinese, it is called "硬葉兜蘭" (ying ye dou lan).
