ブラジルの北部、パラ州が原産です。アマゾン川流域の雨季には水没する浸水林に生え、高さは３０メートル以上になります。樹皮は灰褐色です。葉は３出複葉で、小葉は長楕円状披針形です。葉腋から円錐花序をだし、淡い黄白色の花を咲かせます。樹幹に傷をつけて採れる乳液（ラテックス）は、天然ゴムの原料になります。現在では東南アジアの熱帯地域を中心に、プランテーションでの大規模栽培が行われています。

トウダイグサ科パラゴムノキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Hevea brasiliensis。英名は Para rubber tree。

The para rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is an evergreen tall tree that is native to Para state of Brazil. This tree grows in flooded forests that are along the Amazon River and flooded in the monsoon season, and can reach up to 30 m in height. The barks are grayish brown. The leaves are 3-lobed compound and the leaflets are oblong-lanceolate. The pale yellowish white flowers come in the axillary panicles. Its sap-like extract (known as latex) is the source of natural rubber. This tree is cultivated in the plantations in tropical Southeast Asia.
