インドからインドシナ半島が原産です。高さは１５〜２０メートルほどになり、大きな長楕円形の光沢のある葉が互生します。雌雄同株で、雌花は幹や太い枝の円柱状の花序につき、雄花は枝の先端につきます。果実は、長さ３０〜８０センチの大きな楕円形で、なかの果肉を生食します。焼くとパンの匂いがするそうです。材から採れる染料は、タイやビルマの僧侶の法衣を染めるのに使われます。

クワ科パンノキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Artocarpus heterophyllus。英名は Jackfruit。

The jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) belongs to Moraceae (the Mulberry family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native from India to the Indo-China Peninsula. This tree can reach 15-20 m in height, the leaves are large, glossy, oblong and alternate. It is monoecious. The female flowers are borne in columnar clusters on the stems or thick branches, and the male flowers come in terminal branches. The fruits are large elliptic 30-80 cm long and used for raw diets. They smell like bread when baking. This timber is used as a raw material for Buddhist priest's clerical garment dying.
