ブラジルのアマゾンが原産です。四角形の幹は丈夫で翼があります。葉は大きく、卵形または卵状楕円形をしています。花は１０〜１２センチほどで、暗い赤色をしています。ひげのように見えるのは副花冠で、細長くて白色や赤色、紫色の斑が入ります。果実は「おおながみくだものとけいそう（Passiflora quadrangularis）」とよく似ていますが、１０センチほどにしかなりません。

トケイソウ科トケイソウ属の蔓性常緑低木で、学名は Passiflora alata。英名は Winged-stem passion flower。

The winged-stem passion flower (Passiflora alata) belongs to Passifloraceae (the Passion flower family). It is an evergreen woody vine that is native to the Amazon in Brazil. The stems are quadrangular, stout with wings. The leaves are large, ovate or ovate-elliptic. The flowers are dark red, 10-12 cm across. The filaceous coronas are elongate and white, red or purple mottled. The fruits are similar to Giant granadilla ((Passiflora quadrangularis)), though they are smaller and about 10 cm long.
