The Passiflora capsularis belongs to Passifloraceae (the Passion flower family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed from Central America to Colombia, central Brazil and Argentina. The leaves are kidney-shaped with two shallow, bird's wing-like lobes, and the underside is covered with wooly hairs. The flowers are star-shaped, about 5 cm in diameter, with pale greenish-white to yellowish-green perianth segments and a pale yellow corona. The flowers have a faint vanilla scent. The fruit is elliptic to spindle-shaped with six ribs and ripens bright red. The photos show the garden variety 'Vanilla Cream'.
