The Passiflora kermesina belongs to Passifloraceae (the Passion flower family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to Brazil. For a long time, this species was considered lost. However, after a determined effort, it was rediscovered at the end of 2001. It is characterized by a vine-like stem with drooping branches. The leaves are palmately lobed with three large lobes. The nectary glands are usually located on the petiole in other species, but in this species they are located on the leaf, resembling the eggs of a butterfly. The flowers are reddish purple to deep pink. It is a hybrid parent of the Passiflora 'Amethyst', which was bred in England.
