The Passiflora murucuja belongs to Passifloraceae (the Passion flower family). It is an evergreen shrub that is found in Puerto Rico, Haiti, and Dominica in the West Indies. It is a small, shabby vine with small, upward-facing red flowers from June to October. The fruits, initially green, ripen to a blue-black color. This species is not self-pollinating. Since it blooms from midnight, it is thought to be transmitted by moths and bats, and by hummingbirds based on the color, shape, and fragrance of the flowers. It was discovered in 1753.
