南アメリカ北部のペルーからギアナ、アンチル諸島に分布しています。生育が旺盛で、種子によって繁殖します。黄色い果実はほぼ球形で、なかには甘くて多汁の仮種皮があります。果肉は生食されたり、ジュースやシャーベットに加工されます。

トケイソウ科トケイソウ属の常緑蔓性低木で、学名は Passifloran nitida。英名は Bell-apple。

The Bell-apple (Passifloran nitida) belongs to Passifloraceae (the Passion flower family). It is an evergreen shrub that is found in northern South America, from Peru to Guiana and the Antillean Islands. It is a vigorous grower and reproduces by seed. The yellow fruits are nearly spherical, with a sweet, juicy aril. The pulp is eaten raw or processed into juice or sherbet.
