The Beardlip penstemon (Penstemon barbatus) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is found in the southwestern United States, from southern Colorado to western Texas and Mexico. It grows on rocky, gravelly areas in dry forests and grows to a height of about 90 cm. The leaves are gray-green, narrowly lanceolate, and arranged in opposite pairs. The flowers are pink or white in color. The upper lip has two small serrations that project forward, and the lower lip has three lobes.
