The Showy beard-tongue (Penstemon cobaea) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in central to southern parts of the United States. It grows in limestone and sandy-gravel areas at forest edges, and is 30-90 cm tall. The leaves are ovate-oblong elliptic with sharp serrations on the edges and grow in opposite pairs. In May to June, inflorescences emerge from the leaf axils at the top of the stem, producing pale purple, pink, or white flowers. The corolla has a reddish-purple or purple streaked throat.
