The firecracker penstemon (Penstemon eatonii) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It ia a perennial herb that is native to the western United States; from California to the Rocky Mountains. This herb grows in desert, woodland, forest, and open plateau, and it can reach about 1 m in height. The leaves are lancolate to ovate, untoothed, and most of them are arranged in a low rosette next to the ground. The bright red tubular flowers bloom on vertical flowering stalks 30-120 cm high in early to mid-spring.
