アメリカの西部から中部に分布しています。おもに亜高山帯から亜寒帯にある山地の草地に生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。葉は披針形から長楕円形で、光沢があります。５月から８月ごろ、茎の上部に輪散花序（輪状集散花序）をだし、青紫色の花を咲かせます。種小名は、アメリカの植物学者ペール・アクセル・リュードベリに因みます。

ゴマノハグサ科イワブクロ属の多年草で、学名は Penstemon rydbergii。英名は Rydberg's penstemon。

The Rydberg's penstemon (Penstemon rydbergii) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the western and central parts of the United States. It grows mainly in subalpine to subarctic mountain meadows and is 60 to 90 cm tall. The leaves are lanceolate to oblong and glossy. The plant produces a verticillaster at the top of the stem from May to August, producing blue-purple flowers. The specific epithet is named after the American botanist Pere Axel Rydberg (1860-1931).
