熱帯アフリカから中東アジア、東南アジアが原産です。空き地や潅木帯などに生えて群生し、高さは９０〜１５０センチになります。葉は線形で弓なりになります。穂状花序は直立あるいはうなだれ、３０センチほどの長さがありローズ色を帯びます。写真上から中３は、園芸品種の「ルブルム（cv. Rubrum）」、濃い紫色の葉と赤紫色の羽毛が特徴です。Ｃ４植物（Ｃ４型光合成を行う植物）です。

イネ科チカラシバ属の多年草で、学名は Pennisetum setaceum。英名は Fountain grass、African fountain grass。

The Fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial grass that is native to tropical Africa, Middle East and Southeast Asia. This grass grows in open and scrubby areas, can reach 90-150 cm in height. Fountain grass grows in dense clumps. Leaves are linear and arching. Flower spikes are erect or nodding, up to 30 cm long and rose-colored. The 1-4th photos are a cultivar 'Rubrum', with dark purple leaves and burgundy-red plumes. It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
