ペンステモン属は北アメリカを中心に２５０種ほどが分布しています。園芸品種も多く、メキシコ原産のハートウェギー種（Penstemon hartwegii）とアメリカ中・南部原産のコバエア種（Penstemon cobaea）との交雑種が主流になっています。高さは３０〜７０センチになり、５月から９月ごろ、さまざまな花色の筒状花を咲かせます。和名では「つりがねやなぎ（釣鐘柳）」と呼ばれます。

ゴマノハグサ科イワブクロ属の多年草で、学名は Penstemon sp.（属の総称）。英名は Beard-tongue。

The Penstemon genus (Beard-tongue) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distribted about 250 species mainly in North America. There are many garden varieties, mostly hybrids between Penstemon hartwegii, which is native to Mexico, and Penstemon cobaea, which is native to the central and southern United States. This herb can reach 30-70 cm in height. The various color, tubular flowers come in May to September.
