東アフリカからアラビア半島が原産です。熱帯地域では庭園にふつうに植栽されています。葉は楕円形から披針形で対生します。５月から１０月ごろ、枝先の散房花序に、星形の花を咲かせます。多くの園芸品種が作出され、花色には紅色やピンク色、藤色、白色などがあります。花後に切り戻すと分枝して、また花を咲かせます。和名では花のかたちが「さんたんか」に似ていることから「くささんたんか（草山丹花）」と呼ばれます。
アカネ科ペンタス属の多年草で、学名は Pentas lanceolata。英名は Pentas、Star cluster。
The Pentas (Pentas lanceolata) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is a perennial herb that is native to East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. This herb is cultivated widely in tropical gardens. The leaves are elliptic to lanceolate and opposite. The star-shaped flowers come in the terminal corymbs from May to October. The many cultivars are breeded with varied flower colors, such as rose-pink, pink, lavender or white. When cut back after flowering, it will branch out and bloom again. It is called in Japan "Kusa-santanka" because the shape of the flower resembles a "santanka" (Ixora chinensis).
