アフリカのエチオピアからソマリア北部、アラビア半島に分布しています。「ちからしば」の仲間で、高さは４５〜６０センチになります。明るい灰緑色の葉は幅１０ミリほどの線形で、根元から叢生します。７月から８月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして淡黄白色の羽毛のような花穂をつけます。花壇の縁取りなどに植栽されます。和名では「しろがねちからしば（白銀力芝）」と呼ばれます。Ｃ４植物（Ｃ４型光合成を行う植物）です。

イネ科チカラシバ属の多年草で、学名は Pennisetum villosum。英名は Feathertop grass、White flowering fountain grass。

The Feathertop grass (Pennisetum villosum) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Ethiopia to northern Somalia, the Arabian Peninsula. This herb is closely related to Chinese fountain grass and can reach 45-60 cm in height. The leaves are light grayish-green, linear about 10 mm wide and crowded at the bases. The pale yellowish-white, feathery flower spikes are borne on the stalks from July to August. This grass is planted in the garden edges. In Japanese, it is called "Shirogane-chikara-shiba". It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
