南アフリカ、ケープ地方の南西部が原産です。川沿いの林縁で半日陰の湿ったところに生え、高さは５０〜７０センチになります。茎や葉は、軟毛や腺毛に被われています。葉は掌状に浅裂し、ペパーミントの香りがあります。春から夏にかけて、よく分枝した花序に、小さな白色で紫色の模様のある花を咲かせます。葉は料理の香りづけに使われます。写真下は、園芸品種で葉の真ん中にチョコレート色の斑がある「チョコレートペパーミント（cv. Chocolate peppremint）」。

The peppermint geranium (Pelargonium tomentosum) belongs to Geraniaceae (the Geranium family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to South Africa; southwestern Cape Province. This shrub grows in semi-shaded moist forests edges along streams and can reach 50-70 cm in height. The stems and leaves are covered with soft hairs and glandular hairs. The leaves are shallowly lobed palmately and peppermint-scented. The small white flowers with purple markings on the petals are borne in a much-branched inflorescence, from spring to summer. The leaves are used as a flavouring herb. The bottom photo is a cultivar 'Chocolate peppermint' which has chocolate mottles on the center of leaves.
