おそらくは中央アメリカが原産だと考えられ、現在では世界中で栽培されています。蔓性で６０〜９０センチに広がります。葉は３〜５裂し、はっきりとした鋸歯があります。果実には多様な形態があり、観賞用や食用、飼料用に利用されます。写真上・中１の品種は、食用の「デリカータ種（cv. Delicata）」かも知れません。

ウリ科カボチャ属の一年草で、学名は Cucurbita pepo。英名は Summer squash。

The Summer squash (Cucurbita pepo) belongs to Cucurbitaceae (the Gourd family). It is an annual herb that is probably native to Central America, and cultivated worldwide now. This herb is a vine which spread 60-90 cm wide. Leaves are devided into 3-5 palmately with distinctive toothed edges. Fruits are diversiform, and used for ornamental, foods and feeds. The upper 2 photos may be an edible cultivar 'Delicata'.
