The Mat rock spirea (Petrophytum caespitosum) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed in the western part of the United States. It grows in limestone forests, rocky gravels, and cliffs, and is 10 to 20 cm tall. It spreads out like a creeping mat over rocks. The stems are thick and very short, and the leaves are elliptic and densely arranged in rosettes. The leaf surface is covered with short, fine hairs. In late summer or early fall, spikelets of small white flowers are produced.
