The Southern masterwort (Peucedanum venetum) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a perennial herb that is found in the Eastern Pyrenees, Southern Alps, and Apennines of Europe. It grows in meadows and rocky gravels up to 1500 m above sea level, and is 50-100 cm tall. The stems are well branched, purplish and hairless. The leaves are two- to four-pinnately compound, and the leaflets are usually pinnately divided. The upper leaves are smaller and have broad sheathing stalks. Small white flowers are produced in compound umbels at the top of stems and branch tips from July to August. The bract leaves are narrowly lanceolate.
