アメリカの東部から中南部に分布しています。湿った場所や野原などに生え、高さは２０〜４５センチになります。よく分枝して、全体が粘質の腺毛に被われます。葉は卵形から披針形で互生します。４月から７月ごろ、茎頂に密な花序をだし、紅色やピンク色、白色などの花を咲かせます。園芸品種も数多く作出され、夏の花壇を彩ります。別名で「ききょうなでしこ（桔梗撫子）」とも呼ばれます。

The annual phlox (Phlox drummondii) belongs to Polemoniaceae (the Phlox family). It is an annual herb that is native to the eastern to central-southern United States. This herb grows in waste places and fields, and it can reach 20-45 cm in height. It is much branched and covered with sticky glandular hairs. The leaves are ovate to lanceolate and alternate. The tight clusters are borne at the stem ends and bloom rose-red, pink or white flowers from April to July. Many cultivars have been breeded and color summer gardens.
