アメリカのロッキー山脈から東、コネチカット州からフロリダ州まで分布しています。草原や潅木の茂みに生え、高さは２５〜５０センチほどになります。葉は線形から狭披針形で対生します。晩春から夏にかけて、花茎を伸ばしてピンク色から藤色の花を咲かせます。時おり白花も見られます。わが国では園芸上、「こんぺきそう（紺碧草）」と呼ばれるようです。

ハナシノブ科フロックス属の常緑多年草で、学名は Phlox pilosa。英名は Downy phlox、Prairie phlox。

The Downy phlox (Phlox pilosa) belongs to Polemoniaceae (the Phlox family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the United States from the Rocky Mountains to the east, from Connecticut to Florida. It grows in prairies and shrubby areas and is 25 to 50 cm tall. The leaves are linear to narrowly lanceolate and opposite. From late spring to summer, the flower stalks grow and produce pink to mauve flowers. White flowers are sometimes seen. In Japan, it is called "紺碧草" (meaning "azure blue grass") for horticultural purposes.
