The Tuberous Jerusalem sage (Phlomis tuberosa) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from the Balkan Peninsula in eastern Europe to Turkey, Iran, northern China, and Russia. It grows in dry, rocky, gravelly areas and meadows, and grows 40 to 150 cm tall. It has large underground tubers that are edible. The basal leaves are dark green and triangular with serrations and long petioles, and the cauline leaves are lanceolate. From June to July, it grows purplish scapes and produces pink to purple flowers in whorl-like inflorescences. In Chinese it is called "塊根糙蘇" (kuai gen cao su).
