「アメリカてまりしもつけ（アメリカ手毬下野）」の園芸品種です。高さは３メートルほどになり、何といっても赤紫色の葉が特徴です。けれども夏の過度の日差しは、葉の色を濃緑色に変化させます。５月から６月ごろ、散房花序をつけて白い花を咲かせます。「べにはてまり（紅葉手毬）」という和名があります。

バラ科テマリシモツケ属の落葉低木で、学名は Physocarpus opulifolius cv. Monlo。英名は Diabolo ninebark。

The Diabolo ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius cv. Monlo) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is a horticultural variety of the "American ninebark". It grows up to 3 m tall and is characterized by its reddish-purple leaves. It produces white flowers in corymbs from May to June. It has the Japanese name "紅葉手毬" (meaning "red-leaf temari").
