中国の南部が原産で、台湾からインドシナ、インドに植栽されています。高さは６〜１２メートルになり、大きな楕円形の葉が互生します。４月から５月ごろ、円錐花序を下垂させ、白い竹細工のような花を咲>かせます。果実には１〜５個の黒色の種子が入っていて、食用にされます。台湾華語では「蘋婆」、中国語では「蘋婆（ping po）」と呼ばれます。

アオギリ科ピンポンノキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Sterculia nobilis (syn. Sterculia monosperma var. monosperma)。英名は Ping-pong。

The Ping-pong (Sterculia nobilis) belongs to the family Sterculiaceae. It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to southern China. Today, it is planted in Taiwan, the Indo-China Peninsula and India. This tree can reach 6-12 m in height, and the large elliptic leaves are arranged in opposite. The drooping panicles are borne and bloom white, bamboo-wares like flowers from April to May. The fruit contents 1-5 black seeds and is used as a food. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "蘋婆" and in Chinese "蘋婆" (ping po).
