地中海東部から中央アジア、新疆ウイグル自治区が原産です。乾燥地帯に生え、高さは１０メートルほどになります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、１０〜２０センチの長さがあります。果実は楕円形の殻果で、長さ３センチほど、成熟すると裂開します。この樹木は多くの果実をつけ、広く食品として消費されます。

ウルシ科カイノキ属の落葉高木で、学名は Pistacia vera。英名は Pistachio。

The Pistachio (Pistacia vera) belongs to Anacardiaceae (the Sumac family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to the eastern Mediterranean, Central Asia and Xinjiang. This tree grows in arid areas and it can reach about 10 m in height. The leaves are impari-pinnate compound and 10-20 cm long. The fruits are elliptic nut, about 3 cm long, and dehiscent when ripen. The tree produces seeds that are widely consumed as food.
