The Pleione aurita belongs to Orchdaceae (the Orchid family). It is a perennial herb that was discovered in 1988 in Yunnan, China. It grows in mountain forests at elevations of 1400 to 2800 m and grows to a height of about 20 cm. It has large, pale green "pseudobulbs" (fleshy stems that merge with some of the leaves), and pale reddish-purple to pale purple flowers. The labellum is large and spreading, with bright orange-yellow stripes. In Chinese, it is called "艶花独蒜蘭" (yan hua du suan lan).
