アフリカ東部のエチオピアからタンザニアが原産です。茎の基部からよく分枝して、高さは３０センチほどになります。葉は倒卵形から広倒卵形で、縁には円鋸歯があります。葉は伏毛に被われ、不快な臭気があります。一年を通じて穂状花序をだし、青みがかったふじ色の花を咲かせます。上唇には、濃い斑紋があります。

シソ科プレクトランツス属の多年草で、学名は Plectranthus ornatus。英名は Dog's bane。

The dog's bane (Plectranthus ornatus) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native to eastern Africa; Ethiopia to Tanzania. This herb is branching freely at the base and can reach about 30 cm in height. The leaves are obovate to broad-obovate with crenate margins. They are covered with appressed hairs and unpleasantly aromatic. The spikes are borne and bloom blue-mauve flowers throughout year. The corolla has dark mottles on the upper lip.
