ニュージーランドが原産です。海岸の砂浜や岸壁に生え、成長は遅いものの、高さは１５〜２０メートルにもなります。葉の表面は暗緑色で、裏面や新葉は白毛で被われます。１２月から１月ごろ、赤い雄しべがブラシ状になった花を咲かせます。名前は、マオリ語で「しぶきがかかる」を意味し、この木が海岸に生息して、海や潮風にさらされても生き延びることができることを表しています。クリスマスの頃に咲くことから、「クリスマスツリー」とも呼ばれます。またこの花から採れるハチミツは、イギリス王室ご用達としても有名です。

フトモモ科メトロシデロス属の常緑高木で、学名は Metrosideros excelsa。英名は Pohutukawa、New Zealand Christmas tree。

The Pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) belongs to Myrtaceae (the Myrtle family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to New Zealand. It grows on coastal beaches and cliffs, and although it is slow growing, it can reach a height of 15 to 20 m. The leaves have dark green surfaces, and the underside and new leaves are covered with white hairs. The name "pōhutukawa" means "splashed by the spray" in Maori language, indicating that this tree can survive exposure to the ocean and sea breezes by living on the shore. It is also called "Christmas tree" because it blooms around Christmas time. The honey from these flowers is also famous as a favorite of the British Royal Family.
