The bastard box (Polygala chamaebuxus) belongs to Polygalaceae (the Milkwort family). It is an evergreen subshrub that is native to central Europe and Italia. This shrub grows in montane thickets and woods about 2500 m elavation, and can reach about 10-15 cm in height. The leaves are elliptic to lanceolate, shiny green and leathery. The papilionacenous flowers bloom on the axils in spring to summer. Usually the keel petals are yellow and the flag petals are white. From third to 10th photos are a variety "grandiflora" with magenta flag petals.
