The Polystichum luctuosum (Polystichum luctuosum) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from Japan to Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, Vietnam, the Himalayas, Pakistan, Madagascar and southern Africa. It mainly grows in subtropical biomes and is 30-45 cm tall. The leaves are bipinnate compound, silvered green, glossy and slightly leathery. The leaf stalk base has dark brown to black scales. The sorus is small, arranged in two rows close to the midrib of the pinnules, and the indusium is round. This species is furthermore a triploid apomict with 32 spores per sporangium and has a chromosome number of n=123. KEW's Plants of the World Online takes the view that Polystichum tsus-simense is a synonym. It is unknown whether it is the same species as the "Hime-kana-warabi" (Polystichum tsus-simense var. tsus-simense) of Japan.
