北アメリカの東部に分布しています。池沼の浅瀬に生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。「ほていあおい」の仲間ですが、根茎があります。根茎から葉柄を伸ばして１個の葉をつけます。５月から１０月ごろ、穂状花序をだし淡い青紫色の花を咲かせます。この小さな花は一日で萎みます。和名では「ながばみずあおい（長葉水葵）」と呼ばれます。写真中４・下は、変種の「ほそながばみずあおい（細長葉水葵）」と表示されていましたが、ここでは本種のシノニムという見解をとっています。

ミズアオイ科ポンテデリア属の多年草で、学名は Pontederia cordata（syn. Pontederia cordata var. lancifolia）。英名は Pickerelweed。

The pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata) belongs to Pontederiaceae (the Pickerelweed family). It is a perennial herb that is native to eastern North America. This herb grows in shallow waters of ponds or bogs and can reach 60-90 cm in height. It is related to water hyacinth, though it has a rootstalk. The rootstalk sends out one leaf with long petiole. The spikes are born and bloom pale bluish-purple flowers from May to October. The flowers last one day. We follow the opinion that Pontederia cordata var. lancifolia is a synonym of Pontederia cordata.
