インドの北部が原産です。わが国へは、明治時代の中頃に渡来しました。本格的な栽培が始まったのは昭和時代になってからです。高さは４メートルほどになり、５月ごろに白色の５弁花を咲かせます。果実は黄橙色で、果肉は多汁で甘みが強く香りが良いので生食に利用されます。また果汁は、「うんしゅうみかん（温州蜜柑）」ジュースの香り付けにも使われます。別名で「タンジェリン」とも呼ばれます。

ミカン科ミカン属の常緑低木で、学名は Citrus reticulata。英名は Mandarin orange、Tangerine、Ponkan orange。

The Mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata) belongs to Rutaceae (the Citrus family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to northern India. It was introduced to Japan in the middle of the Meiji period (about 130 year ago). Full-scale cultivation of this fruit tree began in the Showa era (about 70 years ago). This tree grows up about 4 m in height, and the white five-petaled flowers will bloom around May. The fruit is yellow-orange, and the flesh is juicy, rich in sweetness and possesses a pleasing flavor, so it is used for raw food. This juice is used as a flavouring of "Wenzhou oranges" juice.
