南アフリカの東部、東ケープ州からマプマランガ州に分布しています。岩礫地の潅木帯や渓谷などに生え、高さは２〜５メートルになります。多肉植物で、茎は赤褐色を帯び、葉は小さな円形から倒卵形で対生します。冬の終わりから春にかけて、星形の淡いピンク色の花を咲かせます。写真中２・中３は、葉に黄白色の斑が入る園芸品種の「雅楽の舞（cv. Variegata）」。

スベリヒユ科ポーチュラカリア属の常緑小低木で、学名は Portulacaria afra。英名は Porkbush、Elephant bush、Elephant plant。

The Porkbush (Portulacaria afra) belongs to Portulacaceae (the Purslane family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to eastern South Africa, the Eastern Cape to Mpumalanga. This shrub grows in rocky scrubby areas and dales and can reach 2-5 m in height. It is succulent and the stems are reddish-brown, the leaves are small round to obovate and opposite. The star-shaped, pale pink flowers come in late winter to spring. The 3rd and 4th photos show "Gagaku-no-Mai" a horticultural variety with yellowish-white spots on the leaves.
