北アメリカの北部から西南部に分布しています。「やまよもぎ（Sagebrush）」の草原から山地の尾根や草地に生え、高さは４０センチほどになります。葉は羽状複葉で、裂片にはギザギザの鋸歯があります。４月から８月ごろ、赤みがかった花茎を伸ばし、分枝した先にピンク色からローズピンク色のベル形の花を咲かせます。花後、花柱が５センチほどに伸びて羽状に毛が生え、「ちんぐるま」のような痩果の集合になります。

バラ科ダイコンソウ属の多年草で、学名は Geum triflorum。英名は Prairie smoke、Old man's whiskers。

The Prairie smoke (Geum triflorum) belongs Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from northern to southwestern North America. It grows on ridges and meadows in mountainous areas from meadows where "Sagebrush" grows, and grows to a height of about 40 cm. It has pinnate compound leaves with jagged serrations on the lobes, and from April to August it produces reddish flower stalks with pink to rose-pink bell-shaped flowers at the ends of the branched stems. After flowering, the style of the flower stalk grows to about 5 cm long and is feathery and hairy, forming a cluster of achenes like a "Aleutian avens".
