The Sibthorp primrose (Primula vulgaris ssp. sibthorpii) belongs to Primulaceae (the Primrose family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the eastern Balkans to the Caucasus and Crimea in Europe. It grows in open woodlands and on shaded slopes, reaching a height of 10 to 20 cm. The leaves are obovate to oblanceolate with irregular serrations. In early spring, it produces flower stalks bearing rose-pink, red, lilac, or white flowers. The specific epithet honors John Sibthorpe (1758-1796) of the University of Oxford.
