南アフリカのケープ地方の南西部から東部に分布しています。海岸沿いの岬から山地の斜面に生え、高さは２．５メートルほどになります。原産地では一年中、大きな花を咲かせます。花弁のように見える総苞の色は赤色から白色までと多彩です。花には蜜が多いので、「シュガーブッシュ」とも呼ばれます。

ヤマモガシ科プロテア属の常緑低木で、学名は Protea repens。英名は Common sugarbush。

The Common sugarbush (Protea repens) belongs to the family Proteaceae. It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed in the southwestern and eastern parts of the Cape region of South Africa. It grows from coastal headlands to mountain slopes and grows to a height of about 2.5 m. In its native area, it produces large flowers all year round. The bracts, which look like petals, vary in color from red to white.
