The hollyleaf cherry (Prunus ilicifolia) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to California and Baja California. This tree grows in the chaparral areas and can reach 2-9 m in height. The leaves are thick, spiny toothed, similar in appearance of the holly. The flowers are small, white, produced on racemes in the spring. The fruits are cherries 12-25 mm in diameter, edible and sweet.
