アメリカの中部に分布しています。プレーリー（大草原）に生え、高さは３０〜４５センチになります。葉は互生し、奇数羽状複葉で、２１個までの小葉がつきます。小葉は細かな黄褐色の毛で被われています。ラベンダー色からピンク色、時には白色の花が７月から８月に咲きます。花は長さ３〜１２センチの円筒形の穂状花序につき、穂状花序の底から上に咲く上がります。別名で「シルキープレーリークローバー」とも呼ばれます。

マメ科ペタロステムム属の多年草で、学名は Petalostemum villosum (syn. Dalea villosa)。英名は Purple prairie clover、Silky prairie clover。

The purple prairie clover (Petalostemum villosum) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the central United States. This herb grows in the prairie and up to a height of 30-45 cm. The leaves are alternate, odd-pinnate compound with up to 21 narrow leaflets. The leaflets are covered in fine tan hairs. The lavender to pink, and is sometimes white flowers bloom in July to August. They grow in cylindrical spike, 3-12 cm long, blooming from the bottom of the spike up.
