西アジアが原産です。わが国へは明治時代の中頃に渡来しました。高さは２〜５メートルになり、幹や枝には小枝の変化した鋭い棘があります。葉は倒披針形から狭い倒卵形で互生します。５月から６月ごろ、短い枝の先に散房花序をだし、白い花をいっぱいに咲かせます。果実は１０月ごろに鮮やかな紅色に熟しますが、先端には萼片が残ります。和名では「ときわさんざし（常磐山査子）」と呼ばれます。 |

バラ科トキワサンザシ属の常緑低木で、学名は Pyracantha coccinea。英名は Firethorn。 |

The Firethorn (Pyracantha coccinea) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to West Asia. This tree was introduced into Japan in the middle of Meiji Era. It can reach 2-5 m in height and grows acute thorns which transforming from twigs on the stems and branches. Leaves are oblanceolate to narrow obovate and alternate. Corymbs with white flowers come on the terminal stems from May to June. Fruits are ripen bright ponceau, and remain sepals at tips. |
