ヨーロッパから西アジア、北アフリカが原産です。イギリス諸島にも帰化しています。湿り気のある岩礫地などに生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。葉は長卵形で対生します。６月から８月ごろ、茎の上部に総状花序をだし、紅紫色の花を咲かせます。淡紅色や白色の園芸品種もあるそうです。和名では「べにかのこそう（紅鹿子草）」と呼ばれます。

オミナエシ科ケントランツス属の常緑多年草で、学名は Centranthus ruber。英名は Red valerian。

The red valerian (Centranthus ruber) belongs to Valerianaceae (the Valerian family). It is a perennial evergreen herb that is native from Europe to West Asia and North Africa. It is also naturalized in Britain. This herb grows in waste rocky places and it can reach 60-90 cm in height. The leaves are long-ovate and opposite. The racemes are borne at stem ends and bloom magenta flowers from June to August. The cultivars have pale rose-pink or white color.
