わが国の尖閣列島の魚釣島から台湾の蘭嶼島、フィリピンやボルネオ島に分布しています。茎の高さは１０〜３０センチほどになり、帯状の葉が２列につきます。花弁や萼片は淡黄色でやや緑色を帯び、栗色の斑紋や縞があります。花冠のかたちは、ドラゴンの飛ぶ姿に似ています。和名では、「こうとうひすいらん（紅頭翡翠蘭）」と呼ばれます。この「こうとう」とは、台湾の東側にある蘭嶼（らんしょ）の古い呼び名である紅頭嶼（こうとうしょ）に因みます。台湾華語では「雅美萬代蘭」です。

ラン科ヒスイラン属の常緑多年草で、学名は Vanda lamellata。英名はありません。

The Vanda lamellata belongs to Orchdaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from Uotsuri Island in the Senkaku Islands in Japan to Orchid Island in Taiwan, the Philippines and Borneo. The stems are 10 to 30 cm tall with two rows of strap-shaped leaves. The petals and sepals are pale yellow and slightly green with chestnut spots or stripes. The shape of the corolla resembles a flying dragon. In Japanese, it is called "Koutou-hisui-ran" (Koutou jade orchid). The name "Koutou" is derived from "紅頭嶼" (Redhead Island), the old name for Orchid Island in the east of Taiwan. In Taiwanese, it is "雅美萬代蘭".
