コーカサス地方からイラン北部が原産です。山地に生え、高さは１５メートルほどになります。樹皮は平滑で灰褐色をしています。葉は掌状に５裂し、裂片には粗い鋸歯があります。晩春、葉の展開直後に、枝先に直立する花序をつけます。花はごく小さく、緑色です。

カエデ科カエデ属の落葉高木で、学名は Acer velutinum。英名は Velvet maple、Persian maple。

The Velvet maple (Acer velutinum) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to the Caucasus Mountains and northern Iran. This tree grows in mountainous areas and can reach about 15 m in height. The bark is smooth and grayish brown. The leaves are palmately divided into 5 lobes. The lobes are coarsely toothed. The erect flower clusters are borne on terminal branchlets in late spring immediately after foliation. The flowers are tiny and green. (edit by Greg Brockelbank)
