ヨーロッパの東部、コーカサス地方から西アジアに分布しています。標高１０００〜３６００メートルの草原に生え、高さは３０センチほどになります。わが国へは昭和時代のはじめに渡来しています。葉は広楕円形から披針形、倒披針形でロゼットを形成します。初夏に花茎を伸ばし、穂状の総状花序に淡青色の花を咲かせます。

ゴマノハグサ科クワガタソウ属の多年草で、学名は Veronica gentianoides。英名は Gentian speedwell。

The Gentian speedwell (Veronica gentianoides) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the eastern part of Europe, from the Caucasus to western Asia. It grows in steppes at elevations of 1000 to 3600 m and grows to a height of about 30 cm. It was introduced to Japan at the beginning of the Showa period (about 80 years ago). The leaves are broadly elliptic to lanceolate or oblanceolate, and form rosettes. In early summer, it grows flower stalks and produces pale blue flowers in spike racemes.
