The Moss verbena (Verbena tenuisecta) belongs to Verbenaceae (the Verbena family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to South America. It has now naturalized in North America and other parts of the world. It is 15 to 30 cm tall, but its stems creep along the ground and grow 90 to 180 cm long. The leaves are pinnately divided and grow in pairs. The English name is derived from the shape of these leaves. From spring to fall, it produces small purple, pink, or white flowers in umbels at the top of the stem. It is called "karakusa-hanagasa" in Japanese.
