地中海沿岸が原産です。高さは３メートルほどになります。葉は小さく革質ですが、生け花にも使われます。１１月から２月ごろ、枝先の散房花序に白色または淡いピンクの花を咲かせます。果実はピンクですが、熟すと黒くなります。これは胃の不調の薬としても使われます。写真中５〜６・下は園芸品種の「エメラルド・ビューティ（cv. Emerald Beauty）」で、コバルト色の果実をつけます。

スイカズラ科ガマズミ属の常緑低木で、学名は Viburnum tinus。英名は Laurustinus。

The Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the Mediterranean. It grows to about 3 m in height. The small, leathery leaves are also used for ikebana. white or pale pink flowers bloom in corymbs at the ends of branches from November to February. The fruits are pink, but turn black when ripe. It is also used as a medicine for stomach problems. The 6-7th and bottom photos show the garden variety 'Emerald Beauty', which produces cobalt-colored fruits.
