カナダの南東部からアメリカの東部・中部それに南部に分布しています。開けた斜面や、大草原、明るい林、線路などに生え、高さは１５〜３０センチになります。葉は三出複葉で、披針状卵形から倒卵形の小葉がつきます。４月から５月ごろ、白色の５弁花を咲かせます。果実は真っ赤な液果で、強い風味があります。野菜の「いちご」の母種のひとつです。

バラ科オランダイチゴ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Fragaria virginiana。英名は Virginia strawberry、Common strawberry。

The Virginia strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is an evergreen herb that is distributed from east-southern Cananda to the eastern, central and southern United States. This herb grows in open slopes, prairies, open woods and railroads and can reach 15-30 cm in height. The leaves are trifoliolate with lance-ovate to obovate leaflets. The white five-petaled flowers bloom from April to May. The fruits are red berries and much rich in flavour. This is a host species of domestic strawberry.
