アメリカの西部、オレゴン州からカリフォルニア州それにメキシコのバハ・カリフォルニアまで分布しています。海岸の草地や森林に生え、高さは２０〜７０センチになります。葉は深く３裂し、裂片にも深い鋸歯があります。２月から４月ごろ、花茎の上に黄色い花を咲かせます。花弁は蝋質で光沢があり、９〜１７個あります。真夏には休眠します。

The California buttercup (Ranunculus californicus) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the western United States from Oregon to California and as far as Baja California, Mexico. It grows in coastal meadows and forests and is 20 to 70 cm tall. The leaves are deeply parted into three lobes, and the lobes are also deeply serrated. The yellow flowers bloom on scapes from February to April. The petals are waxy and shiny, with 9 to 17 petals. The flowers are dormant in midsummer.
